Story About Lane Changing
Some of you have heard the story about one of our trips to Kansas and the lane changing we did....... here's a follow up story e-mail I received. Hi Jack & Vicki – I’ve thought about you guys often even though we haven’t seen you recently. And I especially thought about you last night. My co-worker’s husband, Paul, is a police officer in Denver. Last night I went on a ride-along with him during his graveyard shift. About two in the morning, after five cars were finishing up at one call, we intentionally headed together to another address but just at normal speed. We were fourth in line waiting at a stop light to make a left turn. As the light turned green, the cars ahead of us instead turned right and we followed assuming the lead car realized he had been heading the wrong way. Suddenly, the three cars ahead of us accelerated rapidly, as did we. In less than a quarter mile, the lead cars turned on their lights at speeds exceeding 60, as did we. At the next corner, the front car turned right, the second one left, and the third right, so Paul headed left. The view from our front seat was pretty impressive, but even better for the cop behind us. Like the Blue Angels on Four Wheels! (Or 11 PT’s east of Limon - - each outfitted with Jack’s lights!) As we made the turn, we finally spotted the car our pair was chasing. After a few blocks of avoiding the inevitable, the female driver finally pulled over and was immediately blocked in by three white cruisers! (Yes, the fifth car had followed us.) As expected by that time, she had outstanding warrants. The full story wasn’t known, however, until the other two cars rejoined us after processing their driver. Apparently three cars had blown through the red light as we were waiting to turn left. They probably had even seen the one police car and had expected to beat the odds evading him. Imagine their surprise when FIVE cops were suddenly on their tail!!! Although the one car that went straight at the intersection got away, another ended up in jail. What was even more amazing is what DIDN’T happen. If I‘d been watching this on the 10pm news, I’d have assumed the radios had been buzzing (“switch on three”) as plans were made to intercept the culprits. Yet I could hear the radios. Nothing was said. It happened too fast. They just knew what to do without saying a word. How many trips to Kansas do you think it would take to perfect that move? ~ Cheryl
